Former Deputy Chief of Staff, Office of the Vice President, and Former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs

Michael Fuchs is a Special Advisor at the Open Society Foundations, where he works on a variety of domestic and foreign policy issues.

From 2021 to 2022, he served at the White House as Special Assistant to President Joe Biden and Deputy Chief of Staff to Vice President Kamala Harris. Previously, Mike served for seven years in the State Department during the Obama-Biden administration, including as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and as an advisor to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He has also held roles as Foreign Policy Advisor to former President Bill Clinton, Senior Fellow at the Center for American Progress, Senior Policy Advisor at J Street, and as Deputy National Security Director on Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign.

He has provided extensive commentary on U.S. foreign policy towards China, Asia, the Middle East, and beyond for print, radio, and TV media, including as a contributing opinion writer for the Guardian U.S. and U.S. News and World Report, and as a commentator on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News.

Originally from New York, Mike is a graduate of Columbia University. He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife, son, and daughter.
