Lawrence J. Gumbiner is a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and Senior Foreign Service Officer. In his three-decade career he served as Chargé d’Affaires at U.S. Embassies in Havana and Tegucigalpa, and Deputy Chief of Mission in Lima. He was Economic Counselor in Bogotá and held attaché positions for economic and environmental matters in Tel Aviv, San José and Managua.
In Washington, Larry served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Environment & Science and Deputy Permanent Representative at the U.S. Mission to the Organization of American States. Larry also managed economic relations with the Western Hemisphere as Deputy Director for Regional Economic Policy and Mercosur liaison.
Fluent in Spanish, Larry currently serves as Adjunct Professor of International Relations at Javeriana University in Bogotá, Colombia and President of Gumbiner Interamerican Strategies, LLC. He is a frequent contributor to media outlets on interamerican relations in Latin America and the U.S.
Larry holds a B.A. from the University of California at Davis, and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
